CRISTINA SARALEGUI
Cristina Saralegui, host of the highly successful Univision Network television program The Cristina Show, is a veteran journalist and an acknowledged expert on issues pertinent to Hispanics. Cristina is not only highly esteemed by her colleagues but is also widely recognized as the most influential role model for today’s Hispanic woman.
Cristina was born in Havana, Cuba, and came to the United States with her family in 1960 at the age of 12. She majored in mass communications at the University of Miami, and upon graduation, took an internship with Vanidades. At the age of 30, Cristina was named editor-in-chief of the internationally distributed Cosmopolitan en Español, the Spanish-language counterpart to the popular women’s magazine.
In 1989, she became the host and executive producer of The Cristina Show when it made its debut on Univision. This year, Cristina celebrates 20 years on the air, 12 Emmy awards and more than 3,000 shows. The Cristina Show is still the #1 U.S.-produced talk show on Spanish-language television. It is also seen throughout Latin America as well as in most European countries with an estimated audience of 100 million viewers worldwide.
Through the years, Cristina has given her name and time to many worthy causes. In 1996 she created the Arriba La Vida/Up with Life Foundation to help those affected by the HIV Aids virus.
Among her many accolades and honors, Cristina was named one of the “25 Most Influential Hispanics in America” by Time magazine, was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame, received the Foundation of American Women in Radio and Television’s “Gracie Allen Tribute Award,” AmFAR’s “National Community Service Award,” The Simon Wiesenthal Center’s 2004 “International distinguished Achievement Award,” as well as The Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s “Arts Award” and the Imagen Foundation’s “Lifetime Achievement Award.”
Her husband, Marcos Avila, a former musician and one of the founding members of the internationally renowned Miami Sound Machine, is her manager.
